A huge thank you to everyone who attended. You made the opening a night to remember ... to treasure really.

People have asked how they find the exhibition ... GPS's have trouble with the precise location of the Peace Village, so the address is Peace Village Messines, Nieuwkerkestraat 9, B-8957 Messines (Mesen in Nederlands). It's open Tuesday to Sunday each week - 9am till 5pm, until 28 February 2010.

There is also a routeplan on the website of the hostel hosting the exhibition - Messines Peace Village.

Racing towards the Exhibition Opening ...

I arrived at the Peace Village here in Mesen at 8.30am, ready to finish the last of my framing and go over the accompanying texts.

Ice was blowing through the air at speed and it felt like I imagined the Artic tundra might feel... very cold and very white.

Finished by lunchtime, it's all about waiting for the technicians to finish with spotlighting and setting up so that I can hang my prints ready for tomorrow night's opening reception.

Suddenly the exhibition is so very close. I'll leave you with a photograph of New Zealand's previous Prime Minister, Helen Clark, arriving on Flanders Fields one foggy morning, accompanied by her husband and NZ's Ambassador to Belgium.

Als je België binnenkomt... Coming into Belgium…

Als je in het noorden van Frankrijk op de juiste weg bent, en je komt België binnen, heb je vanop één van de heuvelruggen een mooi zicht op de “skyline” van het kleinstemstadje van België.

Deze foto werd genomen op een winterse ochtend net na zonsopgang. Het stadje lijkt zich te koesteren in de eerste zonnestralen. Ik ben al wel meer van dat prachtig uitzicht gaan genieten. Nu is het al rust en vree, maar ik kan me best voorstellen dat het hier ooit anders is geweest...

Travelling on the right road in the north of France, crossing the Belgian boarder. On one of the ridges there is this beautiful sight of the “skyline” of the smallest town in Belgium.

This photograph was taken on a wintery morning just after sunrise. The little town seems to bask in the early sun. I’ve been here several times before to enjoy this view. Now it is all quiet but I can imagine that it has been different in earlier days…

For this picture I used my Canon 40D with lens 24-70@70mm – f5,6 – 1/250 – ISO125

Op Flanders Fields worden dagelijks ongetwijfeld honderden foto’s genomen. Het verwondert me steeds hoeveel mensen met fotocamera’s er een mooi beeld willen vastleggen. En achter elk van die foto’s schuilt er een verhaal. De foto wordt dan ook des te boeiender als je het verhaal erachter kent.

Ik vraag me af welk verhaal er schuilt achter het plaatsen van dit kruisje. Wat heeft iemand ertoe bewogen om dit kruisje te “planten” midden in een grasveld in een van de paviljoenen van Tyne Cot?

An awful lot of photographs are taken daily on Flanders Fields. It surprises me every time how many people, with all sorts of cameras, want to take a beautiful photograph. And behind every photograph is a story. The photograph becomes far more interesting if one knows the story behind it.

I wonder what story can be behind the placing of this little cross. What has moved somebody to “plant” it in the middle of a grass field in one of the pavilions of Tyne Cot?

90 Years on ...

And still families come from as far away as New Zealand to honour the soldiers who died on Flanders Fields 90 years ago ...

Here, Samuel Frickleton's New Zealand descendents carry the wreath in his honour.

The Mesen memorial to the New Zealand Victoria Cross winner, Samuel Frickleton, was inaugurated on the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Mesen. Frickleton’s actions played an important part in the success of the Battle, and saw him capture two German machine gun posts.

Vanmorgen ben ik vroeg opgestaan om wat foto’s voor de komende tentoonstelling te verwerken. Maar gezien het prachtig helder weer was heb ik de camera genomen en ben vertrokken. Ik ben naar Tyne Cot begraafplaats geweest in Zonnebeke.

Kijk even naar de diepblauwe lucht. Die reikt van hier tot aan de onsterfelijkheid.

I got up early this morning to organize some photographs for the coming exhibition but the weather was that good, with a nice clear sky, so I decided to pick up the camera and go for a walk. I went to Tyne Cot Cemetery in Zonnebeke.

Look at the deep blue sky. It reaches from here till eternity.

Meet the Press, Flanders Fields

As a New Zealander, I find the people of the Westhoek remarkable in the way that they care for the memory of the young commonwealth soldiers who died on the battlefields of Flanders Fields.

But there are also the experiences that these guardians of the past have given me over the last 5 years. I have met historians, guides, prime ministers, curators, actors, a director, Governor Generals, some remarkable military men and woman and truly lovely everyday Belgians too.

And then there are the days where I have looked up from my work in the press area and discovered I'm alongside the 'big boys' ...

I don't think we realise how many people there are behind the scenes. I hope to introduce you to some of these people in our exhibition.

Sandy Evrard, Burgemeester Mesen

Sandy Evrard is mayor of Belgium's smallest city and the most popular mayor in Flanders, according to polls taken in November 2009. Not only that, the service offered by his personnel came in at number two in Flanders.

I returned to the Westhoek yesterday, just out of my three-month stint as documentary photographer in Berlin.

It's good to be back.

This image was taken using a Canon EOS 5D Mk II, with a Canon EF 70-200mm 1:4L lens.

Oude getuigen… Old witnesses...

Op vele van de militaire begraafplaatsen in Flanders Fields staan mastodonten van bomen.
Deze statige bomen hebben zeker al een respectabele ouderdom, en zijn als het ware stille getuigen van alle bezoekers die daar ooit gepasseerd zijn. Zij hebben ongetwijfeld met hun fluisterende takken en bladeren de vele opgevangen gesprekken verder gedragen in de wind.

De panoramafoto is een sectie uit een vol sferisch panorama. Ik gebruikte een Canon 40D met lens Tokina 12-24mm @12mm – f11 – 1/15 – iso125

On many of the military cemeteries in Flanders Fields you can see huge trees. These majestic trees have undoubtably reached a respectable age and are, as it were, silent witnesses of all visitors who passed by them. Undoubtedly their branches and leaves, whispering in the wind, have passed on the many overheard conversations.

This panoramic photograph is a section from a full spherical panorama. I used a Canon 40D with lens Tokina 12-24mm @12mm – f11 – 1/15 – iso125

Freddy Declerck

You meet some of the best people out on Flanders Fields and Freddy Declerck is surely one of them.

There's a long list of Westhoek people on that 'some of the nicest Belgians I know' list but over the years, I've taken so many photographs of Freddy, guiding people from all over the world across WW1 battlefields that it seemed like an idea to pop at least one photograph of him up here on the blog.

The new year has brought some sulky days so far. And wandering around in the Westhoek makes you wonder… how all these soldiers must have felt in weather like this… and often the “boys” were from very exotic countries… not used to the cold and the snow…

It makes me shiver..BRRRR.

Tot zover waren het in het nieuwe jaar maar wat sombere dagen. En terwijl je dan door de Westhoek trekt vraag je je af... hoe zouden die soldaten zich gevoeld hebben in zulk weer...dikwijls “jongens” uit zeer exotische landen... niet gewend aan koude of sneeuw...

Het geeft me rillingen...BRRRR.

Vandaag is een sombere dag voor mij. Aan een hechte warme vriendschap komt een einde.
Marianne, een zeer speciale vriendin, wordt gecremeerd.
Zij heeft jarenlang een strijd geleverd met een onzichtbare vijand maar heeft die strijd verloren.
Op het veld van eer van het leven heeft zij in veler harten ongetwijfeld een speciale plaats verworven.
Altijd klaar om anderen te steunen en helpen. Zowel in woord als in daad.
Hongerigen voeden en dorstigen lessen...
Sterkte aan de ganse familie en nabestaanden!

Today is a sad day for me. A true warm friendship comes to an end.
Marianne, a very special friend, will be cremated. For years she battled an invisible enemy and finally lost.
On life's field of honor she gained a place in many hearts, always ready with help and support, both in word and deed. Feeding the hungry and slaking one’s thirst…

The statue of St George, Ieper

Last night I was out in the freezing cold taking panorama photographs in St George’s Memorial Church, Ypres.

That church is ever so nice and I had already taken some photographs there a couple of months ago. But that was in full daylight.

I asked and got permission to do the set again by artificial light. So I went there today. Have a look at the photograph of the statue of St George. It's really amazing ... the way the statue seems to look straight at you.

Gisterenavond heb ik de vrieskou getrotseerd om foto’s te gaan nemen in de St George’s Memorial Church in Ieper.

Die kerk is gewoon prachtig.

Een paar maand geleden heb ik daar al een reeks opnames gemaakt. Dat was toen bij vol daglicht.

Ik heb dan toestemming gevraagd en gekregen om de set nog eens over te doen bij kunstlicht. Dus ben ik daar vandaag geweest.

Kijk even naar het beeld van St George. Zelfs het beeld schijnt je vanop zijn sokkel achteraan in de kerk recht aan te kijken.

Wandering with Veterans from Other Wars

I have been visiting Flanders Fields for five years and during that time, I've had the extraordinary privilege of following people on their personal journeys into the past.

This photograph captures a New Zealand veteran from another generation, wandering among the tombstones of the fallen World War One soldiers.

Ypres: a view looking down the Menenstraat towards the Belfort Tower, taken from within the Menin Gate.

Just after taking this picture I was told off by a kindly policeman on duty. He warned me that it might be dangerous standing in the middle of the road taking pictures. A good thing he doesn’t know how many pictures I have already taken standing in the middle of a road. You often get fascinating views from the middle of a road.

I don’t know… wherever I go with my tripod taking pictures I seem to attract policemen or safety guards…

Ieper: een zicht op de Menenstraat in de richting van de Belforttoren, de foto is getrokken binnen in de Menenpoort.

Net na het nemen van deze foto werk ik vriendelijk terecht gewezen door een politie-agent. Hij waarschuwde me dat het gevaarlijk kon zijn om foto’s te nemen terwijl ik midden op straat stond. Al goed dat hij niet kon vermoeden hoeveel foto’s ik al wel vanop het midden van een straat getrokken heb. Een standpunt van op het midden van een straat geeft dikwijls opmerkelijke gezichten.

Verbazingwekkend.... waar ik ook kom met mijn statief om foto’s te nemen schijnt het steeds politiemensen of bewakers aan te trekken...

Remembering the Past, Flanders Fields

My way of working is all about documentary. I capture what I see, accepting the limits of the moment ... often-times a commemorative moment, where respect is demanded of the photographer.

Sometimes it's about emotions you see on the faces of those remembering that long distant past that can still seem so real on these old World War One battlefields.

The flag-bearers fascinate me and I hope to pursue my study of them in the weeks leading up to the exhibition.

The Peace Village, Mesen

The exhibition will be held in the Peace Village in the town of Mesen. It is also possible to book accommodation here. For more information, you can contact them at info@peacevillage.be

The Peace Village, an international rural hostel, is situated in a unique rural surrounding, marked by WW1. It's an excellent accommodation for youth- and school groups, organisations, families, individual tourists, etc.

This is the place to be if you like an active holiday, to learn more about WW1, for a reunion with your organisation or family, or just to relax and enjoy the countryside.

Accommodation: The facility includes 32 four bedded rooms of which 8 are wheelchair accessible. Each room is furnished with its own toilet and bathroom facilities. There is a maximum capacity of approximately 128 beds.

There is a bar for a drink in the evening.

Het landelijke verblijfscentrum Peace Village te Mesen, is gelegen in een uniek landelijke omgeving, getekend door het oorlogsverleden. Het is een uitstekende uitvalsbasis voor jeugd- en schoolgroepen, verenigingen, families, individuele toeristen, enz.

Kom naar hier voor een actieve fiets- of wandelvakantie, om meer te leren over WOI, voor een familie- of andere bijeenkomst, of gewoon om even uit te rusten en te ontspannen.

Accomodatie: Er zijn 32 vierpersoonskamers waarvan 8 kamers optimaal toegankelijk voor minder validen en rolstoelgebruikers. Een badkamer en apart toilet zijn op elke kamer aanwezig. Er is een maximumcapaciteit van 128 bedden.
